We woke this morning to the news that Anwar al-Awlaki, one of the remaining leaders of Al-Qaeda, was killed earlier today in Yemen. Al-Awaki was the American born Al-Qaeda imam behind several terrorist attempts in the United States over the last several years. Details about the attack against him are sketchy, but it appears that he was killed while travelling by car within norther Yemen near the Saudi border.

Of course this does not mean that the war with Al-Qaeda is over. There will be those who have enough hate to assume his place. But it shows that America is willing and able to defend itself against those who want to harm innocent people in the name of a perverted God. All of the leaders who have been killed or captured so far preached a doctrine of hatred teaching the poor and ignorant to sacrifice their lives for a misguided cause, but the same leaders have all worked hard to hide (sometimes behind the skirts of their wives) from capture or punishment while living a life of relative ease. These men are not martyrs or heroes. They are only thugs taking advantage of gullible followers, like the moronic “shoe bomber” pictured here.
It is good news however that al-Awlaki is dead. He will no longer be able to use his knowledge of America as tool against America. And the more successful we are in taking the lives of our enemies, those who aspire to take a visible role as an enemy of the U.S. will have to think more than once about it. One should not be deluded; if someone takes aim at America, he makes himself a target at the same time.
